The latest Selected Price Indexes (SPI) figures offer a glimmer of hope that inflation is finally cooling off in New Zealand. According to ASB senior economist Mark Smith, the SPI, which accounts for about 47% of the contributors to the quarterly Consumers Price Index (CPI), suggests that annual inflation is moderating from its peak of 4.1% in the second quarter. However, the SPI figures also show that fuel prices are still much higher than a year ago, and electricity and gas prices are up 9.5% and 10.9% respectively.
